Rochester's Contribution to the World of Food

This is a Garbage Plate.

What is a Garbage Plate?

A Garbage Plate is the culinary contribution of New York state's Monroe County. Clam Chowder is to Boston what Garbage Plates are to Rochester.

What is in a Garbage Plate?

A Garbage Plate consists of your choice of two of the following:
Macaroni Salad
Home Fries
French Fries
Baked Beans

All on top of one choice of the following:
2 Hamburgers
2 Cheeseburgers
2 Red Hots (hot dogs)
2 White Hots (a local variant on hot dogs which include powdered milk in the ingredients)
Chicken Fingers
Italian Sausage
3 Fried Eggs

You may also opt for mustard, onions, or a special spicy meat sauce.

The picture above was an order of two cheeseburgers with french fries and baked beans with the spicy meat sauce.

Where can you get a Garbage Plate?

The original Garbage Plates came from a restaurant in Rochester called Nick Tahou's. It seems you can get a Garbage Plate almost anywhere in town. We got ours from Jimmy Z's.

It's not a very clean or appetizing looking dish, but it's great at 2:00 in the morning after the bars let out, or when your stomach needs some next-day-settling.
